#70 • Offered at No Reserve | 1966 SHELBY GT40 SUPERFORMANCE CONTINUATION
Part of 5/3/2025 Spring Collector Motor Series Auction (live auction by Henderson Auctions)
Status: Sold
This Superformance-built 85th Commemorative Edition GT40 is an extreme, purpose-built car that stands only 40-inches tall, and shares roughly 2/3rds of the components of the original GT40s, meaning these parts can be interchanged with the original Mk II. Both vehicles have the same dimensions, same stamped steel roof design, and come in very close to the same weight. Where they differ greatly is in the Commemorative Edition’s much improved electro-galvanized steel utilized within the body. This example, Chassis #2, is one of only 85 cars commissioned and licensed by Shelby American, and qualifies for listing in the Shelby GT40 registry, and is entered in the Safir GT40 registry. This example is powered by a 468cid aluminum Shelby FE producing 526HP, with Roush 8-stack fuel injection, special carbon fiber 'snake skin' valve covers, and a 5-speed transaxle. All commemorative cars such as Chassis #2 received stylish Shelby branding, with Shelby-etched door handles joining official Shelby emblems and specific Shelby decals. This particular specimen also features air conditioning, and was the first example finished in Tungsten Gray with silver stripes. Combining storied Shelby design with brutal FE power and modern-day build techniques, it's a virtually new, highly authentic example of one of the most desirable sports cars ever created, having been regularly maintained by the owner’s full-time mechanic who oversees his collection and has been meticulously cared for and stored in a climate-controlled building. VIN: GT40P2012 Selling in the Henderson Collector Motor Series Auction on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama.
